July 7th is celebrated as Global Forgiveness Day.  These are great opportunities to remind ourselves of the importance of forgiveness, to value the forgiveness that others have offered us in the past, and to focus on forgiving those we may need to forgiveâ€"including ourselves. Focusing on forgiveness is important for many reasons.  We all know that holding onto anger hurts us more than it hurts the object of that anger.  Unresolved anger can create health problems just as unmanaged stress can, and it robs us of happiness as well. Knowing this, however, doesnt always make the anger magically dissolve. Its sometimes really difficult to forgive. Why Is Forgiveness So Difficult? There are a few reasons that forgiveness in practice is much more challenging than forgiveness in theory. Some of the more common reasons (as well as counter-arguments) are: They dont deserve it.  We think the other person doesnt deserve our forgiveness. (They may not, but  we  deserve to be free of anger.)The pain is still fresh.  When we think about forgiving the other person, we are reminded of what they did, and we become angry all over again. (This reaction will become less intense over time as we work on accepting what happened. This can be a sign that we need to work on this more, howeverâ€"again, for our own sake, not for theirs.)We think forgiveness means approval.  We think forgiving the other person is the same as saying what they did was okay, or that they are welcome to do it again. (This isnt true either. Forgiving means letting go of anger, and of a lack of acceptance of what happened. Forgiving does  not  mean condoning the behavior, and you can definitely forgive  and  take steps toward protecting yourself in the future. You can even  let go of the relationship  but still forgive.) The Role of National Forgiveness Day and Similar Holidays So why does it help to have a special day for forgiveness? We are free to forgive others anytime, and often the best time to do so is right when you realize that youre holding onto anger.  However, there are times when it really helps to have a special day to focus on forgiveness.  Heres why: An official reminder.  When were holding onto anger, sometimes we dont realize when weve gotten to the point where we are ready to forgive. Having a special day when we are encouraged to look inward can help us to get to a place of being ready to forgive, or realize that were already there.  Momentum from a group.  It also helps to have the motivation and momentum to get past our personal obstacles to forgiveness and forgive already. Having a day focused on forgiveness, a day that everyone is encouraged to celebrate can provide motivation and momentum at the same time.A fresh start for the holidays.  With the holiday season approaching, we may see family and friends we havent seen for a while; its good to clear out any anger we may be holding onto so we can celebrate from a fresh and loving place. What to Do on National Forgiveness Day So how does one celebrate National Forgiveness Day or any day that weve decided to celebrate as our own forgiveness day? By forgiving anyone and everyone we may be angry with. (And again, if you are reading this on a day other than the official National Forgiveness Day, you absolutely can create your own day of forgiveness whenever it works for you.)  Here are some more specific ideas: Take a minute to think about anyone you may be angry with, even if that anger is not fresh. Then decide to let go.If there is a lot to forgive, just let go of as much as you can for now, and work on it again later.Forgive your parents if youre holding onto anger from your childhoodForgive people you grew up with if you had some childhood experiences youre still angry about.Forgive your spouse or partner if you have any relationship baggage that youre holding onto. If it feels difficult to forgive because youre afraid that youll open yourself up to getting hurt by them again, realize that the anger itself is hurting you, but you can take steps to change your relationship and the way you are treated in it.Forgive yourself if youre feeling any self-directed anger for anything, such as goals you havent met, promises to yourself you havent fulfilled, or mistakes youve made in the past. Just let it all go!If you are unable to get to a place where you can forgive someone or something from t he past, and holding onto the associated pain and anger is affecting your wellbeing, you may want to consider working with a professional.  Sometimes there are deeper issues to work through, and having the support of a professional can make the process much easier and quicker to move through. The tone and theme of Candide, a classic work of literature, make the novel relevant to today’s modern world. These two elements of the story bring the classic to life for new generations to relate to as they read it. The satiric story unites a new generation of modern readers to a historical past as they identify with both the theme and tone of the novel as a whole. We will write a custom essay sample on Voltaire’s Candide Relevant to Modern Society or any similar topic only for you Order Now The tone of Voltaire’s highly satirical work is humorously hopeless, and the tone is humorous because Candide and his fellow characters grasp the idea, set forth by the philosopher Pangloss, that â€Å"everything is for the best† and there is â€Å"the best of both possible worlds. † This blind optimism is negated time after time through the misfortunes that Candide and the rest of the story’s characters experience, yet the characters press on with their hopelessly positive attitudes throughout their lives. When confronted with the bleak realities of the horrors of life by a scholar, Candide only replies, â€Å"I’ve seen worse, but a wise man, who later had the misfortune to be hanged, taught me that such things are exactly as they should be: they’re the shadows in a beautiful picture. † This tone is achieved by the horrific events that the characters of Candide endure and their disinclination to accept the idea that, maybe, they really are doomed, and not all is actually for the best. The reader is inclined to give up on hope long before any of the characters do. For example, Candide loses his beloved Pangloss and the kind Anabaptist on his journey to the utopian Eldorado, gets beaten and whipped, kills more than one person, and suffers numerous other misfortunes while still concluding that all is still for the best because he can still find Cunegonde. After Pangloss is hanged, dissected, beaten, and made to row in a galley, he still believes that everything is for the best. Candide asks him, â€Å"Tell me, dear Pangloss †¦ id you still think that everything was for the best in this world? † And Pangloss replies, â€Å"I still hold my original opinions†. He goes on to say that his reasoning is due to the fact that he is a philosopher and it would be wrong to take back what he had said. Also, at the end of the novel, Candide, Cunegonde, Pangloss, and the Old Woman all decide that they are well-off where they are and that they may as well tend the ir garden, disregarding every horrible thing that they have had to experience in their pasts. Pangloss portrayed this best when he said to Candide at the end, â€Å"All events are inter-connected in this best of all possible worlds, for if you hadn’t been driven from a beautiful castle with hard kicks in the behind because of your love for Lady Cunegonde, if you hadn’t been seized by the Inquisition, if you hadn’t wandered over America on foot, if you hadn’t thrust your sword through the baron, and if you hadn’t lost all your sheep from the land of Eldorado, you wouldn’t be here eating candied citrons and pistachio nuts. This final note of proof of their perpetual optimism is consistent with the tone, where Cunegonde is ugly, the Old Woman is disagreeable, and none of the characters are very happy, yet they all continue to busy themselves with something to do and continue being hopeful. â€Å"The whole group entered into this commendable plan, and each began to exercise his own talents. The theme of Candide is that life is utterly u nfair and will continue to give everyone a rough time despite a person’s attitude of hope or a faith in everything being for the best. This prominent theme is shown over and over again as Candide and his companions suffer innumerable misfortunes and tragedies even through the existence of their collectively strong belief that everything will turn out for the best. Each character is traumatized and miserable most of the time. Some are even thought to be dead several times. By the end of the novel, the reader is almost in awe that Candide and the others have not given up on life entirely. The reader ultimately sees that it is hopeless to think that things will turn out well for the characters. It all started at one of my father's regular house banquets (you remember one where you met Antonio don't you?). Only, on this occasion, it wasn't just another boring house party. In fact, it was exactly the opposite! Firstly, I discovered that my father wished for me to marry Count Paris! Paris! Can you imagine Paris and I as a couple?! Of course not! I despise him! He is so arrogant and boastful, constantly bragging of his mansion and riches. Fortunately, my father still sees me as his ?little girl' and has arranged the marriage to be in two years time. Hopefully, I can dissuade him by then. However, that is not the sole reason I am writing to you. I felt that I had to confide in someone other than Nurse ? for I have fallen in love! His name is Romeo and meeting him was the second incident of the feast that made it so different from the usual boring parties. His handsome looks are breathtaking and he is so romantic, nothing like all those other men who treat me as if I am just a typical maiden. Although Romeo made me a little uncomfortable at first, treating me like an angel, I soon made him realize that we were equal ? that I wasn't a goddess or a saint. I immediately fell in love with this charming young man. Later that week, I found myself in an embarrassing situation. I had walked out onto my balcony, too preoccupied with my thoughts to notice anything unusual. I knew that Romeo was an enemy, a Montague, but what was I to do? I was deeply in love with him. Meanwhile, he was standing beneath the balcony and heard of my declarations of love for him. I wouldn't have been so forward had I known he was there but it was too late. Then I suddenly remembered the danger that he was in and quickly warned him. My kinsmen would have killed him the minute thay caught sight of him, but my lover was only concerned of showing me his love. That was when I realized that he was serious about our love. We exchanged vows, and I knew that we were both solemn about our marriage. I have these strong emotions bottled up inside me, yet I feel that there is no one around me that I can talk to. I have confessed my love to Nurse, but she does not understand as she has never loved. I cannot confide in my mother as Romeo is a sworn enemy and she will most certainly keep me from seeing him. I am very confused ? I know that Romeo is a Montague and I love him, but I love my family too and I do not wish to betray them. I do have some doubts of our marriage as we are both so young and everything is happenening so quickly. I think that we may be rushing in a little, but I know that I love Romeo. What can I do? Word Choice Discrete vs. Discreet Word Choice: Discrete vs. Discreet You know those times when your friend has a massive zit on their face but you don’t say anything because you don’t want to embarrass them? That’s called â€Å"being discreet.† Or should that be â€Å"discrete†? No, it shouldn’t. But many people confuse these terms due to the fact that they sound  identical when spoken. It’s therefore worth taking a minute to run through what these words mean and how to use them correctly in your work. Discreet (Careful or Prudent) As suggested above, the correct term to use when describing something which has been done to avoid embarrassment, or to keep something confidential, is â€Å"discreet†: When I went to the clinic, the nurses were very discreet. Until you left. Then they laughed about your genitals.
